Caring for individuals with dementia and Alzheimer's disease & dementia requires patience, creativity, and a focus on maintaining their quality of life. At St. Elizabeth's Adult Day Care Center, we offer activities that engage the mind and bring joy and connection to those we serve. Here are some effective activities that can support individuals living with dementia or Alzheimer's disease.

1. Music Therapy

Music has a profound ability to tap into memories and emotions. For many individuals with dementia, familiar songs can spark joy and stimulate cognitive recall. Singing along, listening to old favorites, or even playing instruments can evoke positive feelings and reduce agitation.

Tip: Create playlists of their favorite music from their younger years.

2. Art and Craft Projects

Creative expression through painting, coloring, or simple crafts can be both therapeutic and enjoyable. Art activities encourage focus and provide a sense of accomplishment.

Examples:

  • Painting with watercolors

  • Making simple greeting cards

  • Creating collages from magazines

3. Physical Exercise

Doing excercises help with blood flow for people with dementia and Alzheimer's

Regular movement is essential for overall health and can also improve mood and sleep in individuals with dementia. Gentle exercises like chair yoga, walking, or stretching help maintain mobility and reduce stress.

Tip: Adapt exercises to their ability level to ensure safety and enjoyment.

4. Reminiscence Activities

Encouraging individuals to share memories can help stimulate their cognitive functions and foster connection. Using prompts like old photos, music, or objects from their past can spark meaningful conversations.

Go on walks to talk while reminiscing
Reminiscing about past topics can be helpful

Activity Idea: Create a "memory box" filled with items from their era that are familiar.

5. Gardening

Spending time outdoors and engaging with nature can have calming effects. Simple gardening tasks like planting seeds, watering plants, or arranging flowers provide sensory stimulation and a sense of purpose.
